Call it inexperience or not knowing but basically when I extracted the update files they stacked into the same folder with the addition of a digit at the end of the file name. Just took me a moment to realise what I was doing wrong. Renamed the files and it was all good. Atleast I won't do it...

Thanks again. I managed to run the first firmware update but keep getting firmware mismatch errors when trying the next stage. Hikvision tech support have not answered there phone to me once in all my attempts of calling and being on hold. So looks like another unproductive day for me then today
